Whether you’re on the way to work or making a long road trip, flats always happen at the worst times. Safely pull over, follow these instructions for changing a tire, then get Chevy service at Foundation Chevrolet for an easy repair.

Getting Ready

Before you do anything, pull over to a safe spot on the side of the road and enable your hazard lights. To get started, find your spare tire and tools, which should include a lug wrench, car jack, and wheel wedges (optional). Remove the hubcap and loosen the lug nuts before you add the jack, but don’t loosen more than half a rotation. Find a solid metal part of the car’s frame and place the jack. Crank the jack until the tire is about six inches off the ground.

Change the Tire

Once your jack is in place, remove the lug nuts and stow them in a safe spot, such as a pocket. Now you can pull off the old tire, put the spare in its place, and reattach the lug nuts, partially tightening them by hand.

Finishing the Job

Lower the vehicle, but not all the way — just far enough that the spare tire is resting on the ground. Tighten the lug nuts as much as you can, so use your lug wrench and your body weight. Now you can lower your vehicle all the way, remove the jack, and pack up your equipment. Store your flat tire where the spare was, and remember — temporary spare tires, or donuts, are only good to drive up to 50 miles, so head straight over to our service center for a replacement.
